Antoine Hickey, an undergraduate student at Carleton University, joined EMBER Fire Group in Summer 2024, bringing his passion for game development and virtual reality (VR) technology to fire safety research. Since then, he has made remarkable progress, playing a key role in the development of VR simulations aimed at understanding evacuation processes for individuals with mobility disabilities.
Through his dedication and innovative approach, Antoine has accelerated the progress of the project, helping us build realistic and immersive VR environments at an impressive pace. At the same time, he has also developed his own skills as a game developer, turning a personal aspiration into a professional strength. His contributions are not only advancing fire safety research but also demonstrating how VR can be a powerful tool in inclusive safety design.
We are proud to have Antoine on our team and excited to see how his work continues to shape the future of VR in fire safety engineering! Check more details here
We are thrilled to celebrate Jane Gachuche for her outstanding achievements this semester! Jane was awarded the highly competitive IBET Momentum Fellowship, recognizing her as a future leader in engineering research. The IBET PhD Project aims to increase the representation of Indigenous and Black scholars in STEM by providing financial support, mentorship, and fostering inclusive research environments. With only a select number of recipients across 18 leading Canadian institutions, this prestigious award reflects Jane’s exceptional contributions to fire safety engineering and her potential to drive meaningful change in academia and industry.
Jane’s Impact Beyond Research
In addition to her groundbreaking work in evacuation modeling and fire safety, Jane also shared her expertise with the next generation of fire engineers. This semester, she delivered a guest lecture in Dr. Mohamed Beshir’s graduate course, "Fundamentals of Fire Safety Engineering", where she discussed evacuation in fire scenarios based on her decade-long experience in fire consultancy. Her lecture was highly praised by students, highlighting her ability to bridge cutting-edge research with real-world applications.
Join us in congratulating Jane on her well-deserved recognition! We are proud to have her as a driving force in advancing fire safety research and promoting inclusivity in engineering. Check more details here
We are thrilled to share that Mohamed Tawfik, Ph.D. student at EMBER Fire Group, was recently interviewed live on CBC News to provide expert insights on the Churchill wildfire. His expertise in wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires and ember transportation played a crucial role in the discussion, where he shared valuable perspectives on fire spread dynamics, risk mitigation strategies, and the impact of embers in WUI fires.
🔥 At EMBER Fire Group, we take pride in seeing our researchers contribute to public awareness and science communication on critical fire safety issues. Mohamed’s ability to translate complex fire science into accessible insights is a testament to his expertise and dedication to advancing fire safety research.
🎓 Beyond Research – A Passion for Teaching
In addition to his contributions to fire science communication, Mohamed also made a significant impact in the classroom. This semester, he delivered two full lectures in the undergraduate course “Statics” to over 400 students, demonstrating his exceptional teaching skills and commitment to mentoring future engineers.
Join us in congratulating Mohamed on these well-deserved achievements! His dedication to both research and education embodies the spirit of excellence at EMBER Fire Group. Check more details here
